Setting up an MOT Station

Setting up and owning an MOT Station can be a daunting and highly responsible task. There are a lot of things you need to do before you can apply Authorised Examiner Status. You will need a suitable premises, DVSA approved MOT Testing equipment, a Level 2 in MOT Testing and a Level 3 in MOT Test centre management. Once you have all of these in place you can now complete an application called a VT01

Checklist

Equipment You Will Need

You will need different testing equipment depending on what class of vehicle you are testing. All your testing equipment must be in fully working order and calibrated regularly and properly. The following is a list of DVSA approved equipment you will need:

  • brake pedal application devices
  • decelerometers
  • diesel smoke meters
  • exhaust gas analysers (catalyst vehicles)
  • exhaust gas analysers (non-catalyst vehicles)
  • headlamp aim testers
  • plate brake testers
  • roller brake testers
  • tow bar socket testers
  • tyre tread depth gauges
  • wheel play detectors

All MOT Stations must keep all of their equipment in working order and calibration up to date with a record of this kept for a minimum of two years and a suitable planning system in place to prevent any equipment from going over the calibration dates.

Qualifications You Will Need

Before you can apply for approval wiuth the DVSA you must firs successfully complete a Level 3 in MOT Management. This course is mandatory and is designed to help you understand the responsibilities you will have as the AEDM and the importance of staying DVSA compliant.

You will also need a Level 2 in MOT Testing (NT) or a fully qualified MOT Tester employed with the company as part of your application for approval.

Staying DVSA Compliant

Once you have completed your VT01 and are now approved by the DVSA, you must stay compliant at all times. The DVSA will visit your garage to ensure you have a quality system in place and are adhering to it at all times, your approval can be revoked at any time if you are found to have any shortcomings. Your quality system must consist of:

  • Planning systems
  • Quality control
  • Staff management
  • Maintenance of site, equipment and tools
  • Monthly Test Log & TQI audits
  • Document retention
  • Annual Training logs & Assessment

All of which must be readily available when asked by the Vehicle Examiner.
